Lance Walley Interviewed By Mixergy.com’s Andrew Warner
Mixergy.com’s Andrew Warner interviews with my brother, Lance Walley, CEO and co-founder of Chargify.com
Lance Walley, the serial entrepreneur behind Chargify and Engine Yard, talks openly about his hits and misses
Business Tips via Mixergy, home of the ambitious upstart!
When I read this line in Lance Walley’s LinkedIn profile about a previous startup, I knew he’d be the kind of frank interviewee you’d need to hear: The system worked very well, but frankly, the world didn’t seem to care :-(
In this interview, you’ll hear the stories behind many of the companies Lance launched, including FaceBridge, the company that inspired that line. You’ll also hear how a 1% ownership difference in his first business made a world of difference.
Today Lance is probably best known for Engine Yard. Some of the world’s biggest Rails websites are on the Engine Yard Platform. Recently, he went on to be the co-founder of Chargify, which simplifies recurring billing for Web 2.0 and SaaS companies.
Lance is currently the CEO and co-founder of Chargify.com. Other companies that Lance has founded and/or co-founded include:
- Engine Yard, Inc.
- Quality Humans, Inc
- FaceBridge Research, Inc.
- PerlUSA
- Hip Tones
- StayTuned
- Parallax, Inc.
Business Coaching – Mixergy Interview with TwitPic Founder
Business Tips via Mixergy, home of the ambitious upstart!
In 2008, Noah Everett wanted to share photos on Twitter. Since there was no way to do it, he grabbed an old server and created Twitpic as a side project. This program will show you how he did it, but before you listen to it, I want to give you some numbers:
- In terms of traffic, Alexa says Twitpic is a top 100 site
- In 2009, the site did over $1.5 million in ad sales
- For every million in sales, the company keeps $700,000
- The site has about 6.5 million registered users
- Noah was recently offered 8 figures for the business
- There are only 4 people working on the site (including Noah’s parents)
At this point, I bet many readers’ eyes will glaze and they’ll say, “Dumb luck, Andrew. This story is just as useful to me as studying a lottery winner.” I anticipated that, which is why Noah and I spent so much time in this interview going over the specific techniques that got him here and talking about what YOU learn from the way he built the company.
