Hillary Schieve Wins Reno Mayor Race 2014!

Hillary Schieve - Reno MayorTotally stoked that my long-time and very dear friend, Hillary Schieve, won this evening’s 2014 election for Reno Mayor – with 61% of the vote.

So proud of her vision, optimism and hard work! Hillary has always been an entrepreneur, owns 2 businesses in Reno, sees tech trends a mile away and is a huge supporter of the startup scene. She also introduced me to Seth Godin long before anybody knew who Seth Godin was. Hillary has ALWAYS been ahead of the curve.

About Hillary Schieve (source: Hillary Schieve for Reno Mayor campaign website):

Hillary Schieve was born and raised in Reno. Schieve’s passion for Reno started long before she was elected to the council in 2012. Schieve spearheaded a new business district that is known today as Midtown, a revitalized area that is now home to thriving businesses, restaurants, and entrepreneurs.

Since being elected to the council, Schieve has created the Technology and Innovation Council, bringing together Reno’s tech and entrepreneurial community by providing resources and access to local elected officials. The efforts have paid off with the Reno Trailhead, which will enhance the walk-ability of downtown Reno.

Schieve has been a tireless advocate to re-brand the city’s image. As one of the founders of The Biggest Little City movement, she was instrumental in bringing the idea to life. Not only did she spend countless hours on the project, she donated a portion of her council pay to see the project become a reality.

Schieve also brings her business experience to City Hall by fighting against wasteful spending. Recently she saved taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars when a national payroll company tried to take advantage of the city.

Not only does Schieve have a strong record of fiscal responsibility on the council, she is an owner of two small businesses in the city of Reno, Clothes Mentor and Plato’s Closet. As a business owner, Schieve created jobs despite the recession, earning her the Reno Gazette-Journal’s 2011 “Entrepreneur of the Year” award. Schieve was also named by Nevada Young Professional Network and the Gazette-Journal as a “Top Twenty under Forty” recipient for her business expertise and her community service.

Schieve’s life has been about overcoming challenges. She didn’t always aspire to get into politics but decided to take her private revitalizing efforts to the council in 2012. Before becoming an entrepreneur and councilwoman, Schieve was a competitive figure skater. But when kidney failure struck her, she received a kidney transplant from her sister, Amanda Sanchez, a local news anchor. She became an advocate for organ donation and spearheaded a national campaign for the World’s Largest Organ Donor Card and lobbied nationwide to promote organ donor awareness.

Schieve also serves as a board member on the Nevada Youth Empowerment Project for homeless teens in Nevada and helped found The Clothing Collaborative to clothe local teenagers at risk.
