How Do You Know If Changing Your Mind Is Good or Bad?

How do you measure whether or not changing your mind was an upgrade or a downgrade in the overall scheme of your life?

For instance, the child who burns their hand on a hot stove (which I did as a child) learns immediately that the stove is hot. Pain is the immediate measure of the action. And, baring any change in brain capability, the experience of pain will stay embedded in the child’s mental software for the remainder of their life.

Another example is the gas gauge in a car. You can see in real-time how much gas is left in the gas tank. So when you change your mind, how do you measure if changing your mind was an upgraded or downgraded?
